Replacing Your Wheel Nuts: Back in Black - Threadstrong Wheel Nuts

If you think about modifying something on your vehicle, what comes to mind? The paint job, decals, tinting your windows, and adding an upgraded stereo are some of the first. What many consumers don’t consider when modifying their vehicle or purchasing a new one are their wheel nuts, which are crucial components for keeping your car moving forward.

While many manufacturers outfit their vehicles with black rimmed wheels, the majority of those wheels are fastened with a standard pair of chrome lug nuts, creating an unsightly and stark contrast between the two.

Here at Threadstrong we took the opportunity to solve this problem by offering all our quality aftermarket wheel nuts in both silver and black chrome coatings (see Fig. 1). And there’s no need to worry about a performance change either when compared to others on the market. Our black-coated fasteners in particular have been thoroughly tested and proven to meet our durability standards (see Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 4). They’re corrosion-resistant and do not warp, even after repeated wrenching from installation and removal.

So, what exactly is black chrome, and why should you spend the money to match your wheel rims? Black chrome plating as we know it today was originally developed in the 1960’s, and it’s a result of putting a layer of black chrome over a layer of nickel through a process known as electroplating. This creates a matte finish on the cap. The nickel layer underneath our black chrome is a great adhesive to Threadstrong’s stainless steel cap, creating a tough and long-lasting finish on your wheel nuts that you can be proud to own.

But just how “strong” is Threadstrong’s black chrome finish? When our black chrome products were put through durability testing, we didn’t hold back. Three different tests were performed to ensure its quality, and here are the results (see Fig. 2, Fig. 3, Fig. 4)
