From Rust to Robust - Threadstrong Wheel Nuts

Clean Threadstrong wheel nuts with mild detergent and water, inspect them for damage and follow the correct installation procedure. Corrosion resistance depends on materials, coatings, environment and care; cleaning cannot guarantee that a fastener will never rust.

Why can wheel nuts corrode?

Moisture, road salt and damage to protective surfaces can contribute to corrosion. Threadstrong capped wheel nuts combine a steel base nut with a stainless steel cap, with coatings and finishes designed for corrosion resistance. The stainless steel cap does not make the entire fastener solid stainless steel or eliminate the need for inspection.

How should I clean the visible finish?

  • Use mild detergent and water to remove dirt and road residue.
  • Avoid harsh chemicals and cleaners that could damage the finish.
  • Check the wheel and cleaning-product instructions for compatibility before use.
  • Inspect the wheel nuts during routine care and have damaged or questionable fasteners evaluated by a qualified technician.

Should I spray lubricant on my lug nuts?

Do not use WD-40, oil, anti-seize or another corrosion spray as a general maintenance treatment for wheel nut threads or seating surfaces. Added lubricant can change the relationship between torque and clamping force. Follow the exact vehicle and fastener procedure if it specifies lubrication, including the product and precise location. A factory-applied coating is different from adding lubricant during service.

Protect the finish during wheel service

Threadstrong recommends hand installation and removal, with final tightening to the vehicle manufacturer’s specified torque using a torque wrench. Impact-wrench installation can damage the product and void the one-year limited warranty.

Use a correctly sized, unworn socket and review the installation and removal guide. Inform your service provider of the product instructions before tire rotations or other work that requires removing wheel fasteners.

When should I ask for help?

Stop and seek qualified assistance if a nut will not engage by hand, the socket no longer fits properly, threads or seats appear damaged, or corrosion makes the condition uncertain. Do not force a damaged fastener or treat its appearance as proof that it is safe to reuse.

Threadstrong vehicle fitment information is based on original-equipment (OEM/factory) wheels. Check the product’s listed applications and specifications for your exact vehicle. If you have aftermarket wheels or are unsure about compatibility, contact Threadstrong before purchasing or installing.

Manufacturer guidance

Vehicle-specific instructions take priority. For examples of why torque and lubrication instructions must be matched to the fastener, see Ford’s wheel-fastener instructions. The values and procedures on that page apply only to the vehicles covered by that manual.
